Finding birthday presents - an impossible thing?

Almost all of us have experienced it ourselves: your own birthday is approaching and you are full of anticipation and start unpacking your birthday presents. But instead of the nice gesture you were hoping for that shows that the person giving the gift knows you well, such as the anime merch you have been wanting for a long time, you find an iron, the umpteenth gift voucher or scratchy socks in the package.
